Rawkus Records, fondé en 1996 par Brian Brater et Jarret Myer, est devenu un label phare du rap indépendant new-yorkais à la fin des années 90, marquant la scène avec des artistes comme Mos Def, Talib Kweli, et Pharoahe Monch. Grâce à des projets acclamés comme Black Star et Soundbombing, il a su capter l’essence du hip-hop conscient et underground. Après un succès grandissant, le label s’est heurté à des défis financiers et à une restructuration en 2002 après avoir été racheté par MCA. Son influence perdure malgré sa fermeture en 2004, ayant laissé une empreinte durable sur le hip-hop.
